For our negotiated unit (FMP) we were asked to come up with something for the short story 'Blumfeld an Elderly Bachelor' before we started our own project and this was my take on it. I decided to focus on the bouncing balls within the wardrobe as well as the children. I found it much more fun this way, and wanted to make the children part of the wardrobe design. The final is a 3D paper card layered piece, photos will be up soon! :) 

Graduation Book

Finished Illustration for Number One

I finish uni in around 6 weeks and graduate in around 2 or 3 months, scary stuff! So to celebrate this and to showcase all of our classes work, we're putting together a little book with an illustration from each person based on the number we were given. I got given the number one, as previously explained in a past post.
This is my final illustration for the book, it took weeks to complete around other projects but i'm happy with the result! I decided to go for the theme of 1st class stamps but make them more oriental and interesting. For the moment they are being shown on a Tumblr page for people to see, which you can find here. If you click on the UOL BA (Hons) bit at the top you can view everyone's work! And if you have a Tumblr you can like and reblog your favourite ones. I'm so excited for this as there are many great pieces of artwork, I hope you'll like it to :)

I recently entered the Fossil 30th Anniversary Competition earlier in February. The competition was for making designs that would go on their watch tin packages, basing it around the subject of 1950's vintage fashion, cars, Route 66, the open road and so on. I decided to go for vintage pin up styles with a modern flair (her dress and watch, which were based on some of their designs in their shop). This is the previous design I was going to use for the competition but ended up tweaking it a little instead, i'll show the final entry in another post! I did this design fairly quick and kept it super simple due to the fact that I decided to enter the day of the deadline... but the result is still good and it was fun! :) Fingers crossed for the competition!

I'm soon to be completing my third and final year at University (eaaak!!) and there is a graduate book that will have artworks from everyone in the class which will be printed and sold, it's so exciting! The theme was numbers and we all had to pick a number at random from a hat.. I picked number one.. no pressure haha. I struggled with this number but was finally happy with the idea of doing an illustrated first class stamp, with an oriental theme which was inspired by Brittney Lee and Audrey Kawasaki's artworks.
So here are the inked sketches for my design, soon to be followed by the complete version!

Just dusting off the blog since I haven't posted in nearly 3 months..Wow! I've been so so busy with University work recently that I've neglected this space but no more! Though I need to get good quality photos of my recent work I thought to start off my first post of 2014 with my inked sketches for my take on Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness.

Here it is! the final design for the Corned Beef advert poster, after weeks and weeks (with a sprained wrist.. not fun in the slightest) I have it completed and i'm pleased with the outcome :) Majority of it was done in Illustrator; the characters and type, the rest was done in Photoshop. I'm still learning the ropes of Photoshop so to me, this was a challenge but a fun one! Yay just in time for assessment this week :)

Space themed Crown Brand corned beef advert

Just a progress shot, (though i'm a fair bit further on than this image shows, but it's the only image I took of my progress haha..) of my design for the Crown Brand corned beef space themed advert. Mixed wild robot cat, space woman and cute alien :) Been having fun doing this piece but it's taking me much longer to complete than anticipated due to an injury to my wrist which is taking its sweet time to heal. Slow and steady.. slow and steady.

New Favourite Artists Discovery

Recently I've been lacking in posts due to constantly keeping track on University work, I do apologise! However, (sorry this isn't a post of my work, I know you're all heartbroken) in my constant search in finding artists I like and get inspired by I came across two, yes that's TWO new artists that I love. They both work as a Visual Development artist for Disney Animation which makes me love them more as I'm a sucker for a good Disney film.

The first artist being Helen Mingjue Chen, I found her on Instagram where I've found a lot of my new favourite artists believe it or not, and went on a search for websites and blogs by her to see her work in full. You can find her work here and here.

She has also done work as the main artists on this little animation called 'The Paperman' which I only found out recently but knew of the little animation months ago, so that was a nice little piece of information as the artwork in it, I really like! Here is the trailer to the animation below; it is a Disney Oscar Nominated Animated short film and here is the full animation (around 6 mins). Helen has also done work in films such as Tangled, Wreck it Ralph, Frankenweenie and Pinnochio.

The second artist is Brittney Lee, another visual dev artist for Disney Animation. I found her work through Helen Chens blog and immediately took a liking to her vibrant work. You can find her work here. Her style always seems to have that fun essence to it, her characters looking happy and bubbly, bright colour palettes and such. Brittney has a lovely style and her use of typography is very playful! She is very talented with paper layered work. Here are some of my favourites!

For the past few weeks I've been working on various things but one project we have been given is to enter the Serco Prize Competition 2013 which can be found here. The theme is London stories, fictional or non-fictional, well known or not well known and after hours of searching I found a ghost story which sparked my interest about a chicken in Pond Square. I thought it would be a brilliant way to go about this competition, doing something funny and spooky (quite a coincidence that it's close to Halloween too wooooh.) While choosing a story to base my design on I was also looking through a variety of my favourite artists to help inspire me and I decided upon Steve Simpson as his style is quite like how I wanted mine to look like in the end. He has lots of fun factors within his pieces and is incredible at typography which is something ill be dabbling in with this piece. Steve Simpson also uses limited colour palates brilliantly which is another reason I chose to base my piece around his work. The competition deadline is 3rd November.. Wish me luck!

A collection of portraits I had done during the course of summer, we had 50 words to do an illustration to and incorporate the text. These are my favourites of the bunch! All are in different mediums; pencil colour, pencil, fine liner, dip pen and ink and Adobe illustrator.

In 2nd year, we were each given a Kurt Schwitters story to base a poster design on which highlighted the main parts of the story. The story that was given to me was Fisch und Mensch (Fish and Man). In short, from what I got from the story was that it was a fish that escaped death from divers by jumping out of the ocean and ripped the wings off a bird passing by, taking the wings it flies to its freedom but gets shot by another man. It's quite a short story with a hint of violence so I had decided to take a different approach to the design and make it look more.. elegant. I was heavily influenced by paper cut outs at this time, and was originally going to do this piece as a cut out but due to lack of time I opted for the paper cut out 'look' which I thought came across quite well. The finishing touches (changing the colour) were done in Photoshop, the design was drawn out in ink.

This was my entry for the Macmillan Competition 2013 (unfortunately didn't end up entering in the end) with my story 'Little Princess'. Our tutors told us to look at existing examples of tales/fables/short stories to either illustrate or use as a starting point for our own story (which I ended up doing).
An obvious.. I chose dragons because well.. I am just obsessed with dragons! My story was basically about a dragon that befriends a little girl and grants her a wish to cheer her up (he found her crying.. aww). She wished to be a princess so as to grant her wish off he went to find her a crown and played princess with her but as most stories have, there is always a bad guy (dun dun dunnnnn). This bad guy is the King Emperor dragon who, seeing everything through his magic ball, gets jealous of the dragon and little girls friendship and wants her for himself. He flies from his castle (obviously) and challenges the friendly dragon for the girl but loses (as bad guys do) and the little girl and dragon fly off into the sky all joyous, ahhh :)

This was my first time using Photoshop to do anything other then a little photo editing and such so it took me a fair while to complete even with giving myself plenty of time, I still ended up just missing the competition deadline.. boo. I'm still pleased with the outcome and it's definitely one of my most favourite pieces. (I'm not sure about the text but we'll leave it as it is for now..)

These illustrations are from a project back in early march time, we were all given the story 'The Strange Feathery Beast' written by Lee Cooper. There were blank spaces next to some parts of the text for us to fill with our illustrations of the story. I haven't posted all the pages, only the ones with my illustrations on so if you're trying to read the text like a story.. it won't make much sense! I opted for a silhouette style for this, due to doing my usual browsing different illustrative sites such as Behance, Pinterest, Illustration Served etc to get inspiration I found myself being drawn more towards this design. I liked the simplistic look and thought it would come across well within the story having bold illustrations. I used dip pen and Indian ink for the finals. 

This was one of my favourite projects to do as i found it challenging to fit my artwork to a story and within the body of the text.
